Ian Berry picks the winners at the Grand National
On my flight over from Lisbon to Stansted I had a chance meeting with an ex-student. “Business or pleasure trip?” I inquired. Sofia informed me that she was off to visit a friend in London and was taking in a visit to Ascot. I mentioned that I, too, was due to spend a day at the races, albeit in slightly less salubrious surroundings.
The Dave Bickers East Anglian Grand National was held at Marks Tey, Essex, on Sunday, June 19. Now, ask typical young motorcycle sport fans of today what they associate with the term ‘Grand National’ and odds are they will tell you about Britain’s most famous of horse races, run annually at Aintree. But if you were able to ask their 1950s or even 1960s counterparts, they would most likely tell you of the prestigious events that dominated the scrambles calendar and bore the same name.
